Challenge C

“Impulse control

Case

A 16 year old boy suffered from intracranial hemorrhage  in the left frontal region due to a vascular malformation  which he was operated on . After discharge from rehab treatment  his interaction with family and friends became complicated :  he gave inappropriate intruding statements during  conversation ,was upset over minor issues  and his entire social behavior appeared inappropriate not reacting adequately  to situtional circumstances. His decisions appeared to be premature  and with lack of consideration  He lost his friends.and  the family felt that life with him  had become very difficult.

If Patients cannot withhold sudden impulses, this may lead to socially  inacceptable behaviour and resulting in conflicts. Such impairment of impulse control psychologists treat by various learning techniques to block impulses and learn alternative forms of behaviour. This is supported by reward systems to shape adequate behaviour.
